The global structure of galactic discs

چکیده
A statistical study of global galaxy parameters can help to improve our understanding of galaxy formation processes. In this paper we present the analysis of global galaxy parameters based on optical and near-infrared observations of a large sample of edgeon disc galaxies. We found a correlation between the ratio of the radial to vertical scale parameter and galaxy type: galaxies become systematically thinner when going from S0’s to Sc’s, whereas the distribution seems to level off for later types. The observed scale length ratios (and thus the radial colour gradients) largely represent the galaxies’ dust content. On average the colour gradients indicated by the scale length ratios increase from type Sa to at least type Sc. For galaxy types later than Sc, the average colour gradient seems to decrease again. The distribution of K-band (edge-on) disc central surface brightnesses is rather flat, although with a large scatter. However, the latest-type sample galaxies (T > 6) show an indication that their average disc central surface brightnesses may be fainter than those of the earlier types. This effect is probably not the result of dust extinction.

The effect of variation of stellar dispersion velocities by the galactic latitude in interpreting gravitational microlensing observations
Our galaxy is a spiral galaxy and its stars are mostly in a thin disk and rotate around the galactic center. The vertical component of the dispersion velocity of stars is a function of the galactic latitude and decreases with increasing it. In the galactic Besancon model, this dependence is ignored and they just consider the dependence of dispersion velocity on the stellar age. Becanson model i...
متن کاملCan galactic nuclei be non-axisymmetric? — The parameter space of power-law discs
The shape of a cusped galactic nucleus is constrained by the range of shapes of orbits in its gravitational potential. It is shown for scale-free non-axisymmetric discs that while a plausible elongated density model requires at least some orbits to spend more time near the major axis than anywhere else, both regular boxlets and tube orbits generally cross the major axis too fast for self-consis...
متن کاملThe Disc Origin of the Milky Way Bulge
The Galactic bulge, that is the prominent out-of-plane over-density present in the inner few kiloparsecs of the Galaxy, is a complex structure, as the morphology, kinematics, chemistry, and ages of its stars indicate. To understand the nature of its main components—those at [Fe/H] −1 dex—it is necessary to make an inventory of the stellar populations of the Galactic disc(s), and of their border...
متن کاملStar formation in accretion discs : from the Galactic Center to Active Galactic Nuclei
Context. Keplerian accretion discs around massive black holes (MBHs) are gravitationally unstable beyond a few hundredths of parsec and should collapse to form stars. It was indeed shown recently that an accretion/star formation episode took place a few millions years ago in the Galactic Center (GC). This raises the question of how the disc can survive in AGN and quasars and continue to transpo...
متن کاملSimulations of minor mergers . II . The phase - space structure of thick discs
We analyse the phase-space structure of simulated thick discs that are the result of a significant merger between a disc galaxy and a satellite. Our main goal is to establish what would be the characteristic imprints of a merger origin for the Galactic thick disc. We find that the spatial distribution predicted for thick disc stars is asymmetric, seemingly in agreement with recent observations ...
متن کاملThe effect of cooling on the global stability of self-gravitating protoplanetary discs
Using a local model Gammie (2001) has shown that accretion discs with cooling times tcool ≤ 3Ω −1 fragment into gravitationally bound objects, while those with cooling times tcool > 3Ω −1 evolve into a quasi-steady state. We use three-dimensional smoothed particle hydrodynamic simulations of protoplanetary accretion discs to test if the local results hold globally. We find that for disc masses ...
